New Jersey Reparations Coming Soon?

There is currently less than 48 hours until a total government shutdown. Funding for the government is set to run out this Sunday at 12:01 A.M, and unless both parties can come to a conclusion on a bill to fund the government till the middle of November, a shutdown is imminent.

REPARATIONS IN THE WORKS IN NEW JERSEY

On September 28th, 2023, the New Jersey reparations council, that was created by the New Jersey institute for social justice, had its first public meeting discussing slavery and reparations.

The council, consisting of over 50 members, has begun its work with a focus on exploring the history of slavery and its impact. Here are three key takeaways from their first meeting:

  1. Historical Reflection:

The council's history subcommittee met first, marking the beginning of a two-year effort to delve into the history of slavery in New Jersey. The committee emphasized that enslaved individuals were not faceless entities but had families, dreams, and aspirations, and their experiences continue to resonate through generations.

  2. New Jersey's Role in Slavery:

New Jersey, sometimes referred to as the "slave state" of the North, was the last northern state to abolish slavery. The council pointed out that slavery in New Jersey was harsh and comparable to conditions in the southern colonies and the Caribbean, with intense physical labor on plantations.

  3. Struggles to Abolish Slavery:

The council believes slavery persisted in New Jersey due to economic interests and the belief among some that it was sanctioned by divine order. New Jersey was the last northern state to pass a "gradual abolition of slavery" law in 1804, which allowed for the continued retention of some slavery-era powers, including the abandonment of enslaved children for service.

The council's work is part of broader efforts to acknowledge the historical legacy of slavery and its ongoing impact on communities, with a focus on understanding the history of slavery in New Jersey and proposing measures to address its consequences.

Do you think reparations should be dispersed over 200 years after the abolishment of slavery?

CHRIS CHRISTIE ON THE OFFENSIVE IN GOP DEBATES🇺🇸

The second republican presidential debate occurred on September 28th, and left us with an iconic quote from New Jerseys ex-governor.

“Were gonna call you Donald Duck” -Chris Christie

That moment was produced as a dig at Donald Trump, whose “ducking” strategy seems to be working, as he still leads in all of the polls.

Christies strategy, however, is more blitzkrieg on Donald Trump.

Since the debate, Christie has tweeted 16 times (21 total) about Donald Trump in less than 48 hours. This strategy is sure to get engagement from twitter users of all sides, but does little to build a legitimate foundation for his campaign.

This campaign style is not new to Christie, as his insults between himself and Trump have been going on for 8 years.

It doesn’t appear to be working now either.

On the actual policy side, Christie picked his target that he hopes will steer him into favor with republican voters.

The Teachers Union.

In an attack on both the union and the current president Joe Biden, Christie took his shot:

when you have the president of the United States sleeping with a member of the teachers unions, there is no chance that you can take the stranglehold away from the teachers union every day.

Chris Christie

This dig is in reference to First Lady Jill Biden who is a member of the union that Christie despises.

It is too early to tell how this target will effect his polling numbers in the long run, but currently sitting at a 2.9%, its not looking bright for the Jersey man.
