Welcome to The Daily Bagel

The Supreme Court officially ruled against affirmative action yesterday in a 6-3 vote stripping the power of Universities to judge and admit students based on their race. On the matter, Chief Justice John Roberts stated “Nothing in this opinion should be construed as prohibiting universities from considering an applicant’s discussion of how race affected his or her life, be it through discrimination, inspiration, or otherwise.” This has given way to a new perspective on race in America called “race neutrality”; whether this idea will lead to more disparity or more fairness, time will tell.

Murphy Mayhem

The Governor shows his pearly whites.

Being a New Jersey governor means enduring verbal and fiscal conflict with constituents at any given time. This is once again the case as Gov. Phil Murphy sues three school districts, including the town he grew up in (cold).

A Topic of Debate

Transgender Policy: Middletown, Marlboro, and Manalapan-Englishtown all recently passed district wide policy enforcing teachers and parents to work together in addressing and accommodating the self-identity of students. This is opposition to the Murphy camp that believes outing these students against their will poses serious mental health risks and threatens physical harm to students, including the of risk of increased suicides.

The boards of education are yet to comment against the Attorney General strong arming these districts, however Parents from middletown claim, "They're suing the parents, and they're suing the taxpayers who support the Board of Ed with wanting to know what's going on with their kids in school,"

This ongoing conflict has yet to see a resolution that pleases both the parents and government alike, as both seem to believe they are doing what’s right to support kids.

All about the Money

Budget

New Jersey legislators are working out the final details of the proposed budget of $53 Billion  for fiscal year 2024; the highest proposed budget in state history.

The largest portion of this 4 Billion dollar increase is expected to go to K-12 education and will, “fully [fund] the public-worker pension fund obligations.” Murphy is also pushing to increase child tax credits, from $100-$500, to $200-$1000 to provide relief for young families raising children. It just might be the time to start a family, if you haven’t already. 😉

Not all are pleased with the budget, some NJ Senate republicans have spoken out about a supposed rushing of the bill, “This is no way to run a government,” Declan O’Scanlon (R-Monmouth), who believes that the actual contents of the bill have been rushed and are grossly disproportionate. Keep your eyes open for further updates today.
