The $200 Million Scammer

50% of the total women's world cups have been won by the United States, including the most recent tournament in 2019. The U.S ladies look to continue their reign of dominance tonight in their opening game of the 2023 world cup against Vietnam. Keep your eye out for NJ natives Casey Murphy and Alana Cook, both featuring in their first. (Link)

The Fraud who Couldn’t be Stopped

Imagine this:

The year is 2012, and you’re on pretrial for one of the largest Ponzi schemes in history, causing $200 million in losses.

During the pretrial for that case, you get caught committing another scheme, causing $6.7 million of damages.

You get sentenced to a total of 24 years in prison. But by some strike of luck, in 2021, President Trump decides to commute your sentence and let you out after only 8 years served.

This is the true story of Lakewood man Eliyahu “Eli” Weinstein.

The Lakewood Scoop

Escaping a crime so large with only 8 years of time served is virtually unheard of, making Weinstein one of the countries luckiest criminals.

Wielding this title, he did the only reasonable thing to do with this undeserved fortune. Get back into scamming.

Now released in 2021, Weinstein wanted to get back in the game, but couldn’t use his name due to his reputation.

This was the alias used by Weinstein to create his new project, Optimus investments. Under this name, Weinstein promised investors that the company had lucrative deals on:

  • Medical supplies, masks

  • Medkits that would be sent to Ukraine

  • Hard to find baby formula

Needless to say, these were all lies to secure cash from large companies, which worked.

Overall, 150 investors were defrauded, and $35 million was taken in a crime that was in the leastwise, predictable.

Eli Weinstein was officially arrested for the second time, on Wednesday, July 19th 2023.

What Now?

After a third charge and over $230 million taken, it is hard to believe that the 49 year old will be free for a long time.

In the mean time, make sure to be on the look out for scams. From your email to your home phone, there is an endless amount of frauds trying to take your hard earned cash. Be on the lookout and double check everything.

Stay safe New Jersey.
